The Where Do We Eat guide
A good meal.
A simple way to keep it.
Start with one saved place. Come back here for the details.
Updated September 8, 2026 · Matches beta build 15
Start here
The app has two main tabs: Decide for choosing a restaurant and Log for recording and finding meals. Your places, people, contexts, and settings are available from the management menu (the three dots). On larger screens, use the sidebar.
- Save a restaurant you like or want to try.
- On Decide, choose a context and guests, then request choices.
- After eating, log the meal and add any notes you want to keep.
The introduction appears once after this update. Continue through it or Skip; dismissing it also counts as completion. Find How It Works → Replay Introduction in the app to see it again. The guide is also available in Settings and the Mac Help menu.
Save places & recommendations
- Tap Add Places or the plus button.
- Search for a restaurant and select the correct location. Check the address, especially for chains or multiple branches.
- Turn on Want to Try if you haven’t been there. Under Recommended by, choose a saved person or type a name. You don’t need to create a person first.
- Tap Save. The add screen closes and confirms the saved restaurant.
More details holds meals, contexts, tags, favorites, and custom naming. You can fill these in now or edit the restaurant later. Changing the selected search result keeps your chosen status and recommender.
Favorites, Want to Try, and your library
Want to Try collects places you haven’t tried. Favorite marks a place you especially like. Open Places from the management menu or View all on Decide to browse and edit your collection.
Adding several places or adding manually
Use Import a list of places for bulk capture. Check each matched location before saving. If search can’t find a restaurant, choose Add a place manually and enter its details.
Duplicates and a failed save
An already-saved place offers an update choice and Open saved place. Check possible matches before saving a separate branch. A failed save keeps the draft and shows an error so you can try again. The restaurant and its recommendation attribution save together.
Choose where to eat
- Open Decide. Choose All saved or narrow the pool to Want to try.
- Choose the context and check who’s going. Add a request in What sounds good?, such as “Something quick for lunch.”
- Tap Show 3 choices for a short list, or Browse matches to see every place that fits.
- Open a restaurant to decide what happens next.
Returning to Decide keeps your selections. If nothing fits, broaden the request, check the selected context and people, or switch back to All saved. The app starts with your saved collection, so adding more places gives it more options.
Voice entry is available from the microphone where supported. Apple Intelligence is optional; availability depends on your device and settings.
Contexts & the people you eat with
A context groups places and preferences for an occasion: Work, Family Dinner, or a regular lunch with friends. Manage contexts and people through the management menu or sidebar.
- Create or open a context and organize the restaurants that belong to it.
- In People, open someone and set their relationship to that context.
- Choose Always include for someone who usually comes along. Available makes them an option without selecting them automatically.
When you type a meal that names a context, its default guests come along. Explicit companion names and a guest list you manually changed take precedence. Check the preview before saving, particularly when tonight’s group is different from usual.
Log a meal, orders & modifications
Open Log and type what happened:
Dinner at Juniper Table yesterday with Alex.
- Check the restaurant, date, and people in the preview.
- Correct anything that needs changing, then submit.
- Open the saved visit and add notes or photos when you have time.
You can also use Log a Meal to choose the details directly.
Use visit notes for what people ordered
You don’t need to build a menu just to remember dinner. Write a note such as “Alex: veggie burger, no onions. Me: curry, extra spicy.” The note stays with that visit and restaurant.
Correcting a meal or undoing a log
Open a saved visit to edit its date, people, and notes. Use Undo after logging to remove the new visit. Recently Deleted lets you restore a deleted visit.
Directions & future plans
These actions have different effects. Choose the one that matches what you mean:
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Log & Get Directions | Records a visit and opens directions. |
| Directions Only | Opens directions without recording a meal. |
| Make a plan | Creates a plan for a future meal, not a completed visit. |
Use Plans to return to saved plans and change the details. Calendar actions open Apple’s event editor; a calendar event and a completed dining visit are separate things.
Find a past meal
- Search in Log: try a restaurant, person, or something you remember ordering.
- Browse the calendar: choose a day to find its meals.
- Open restaurant history: open a place’s visit history to see previous meals and search their notes.
Open an individual visit to see or correct its details. Keeping orders in visit notes makes them useful long after the meal.
Siri, Spotlight & privacy
Siri and Shortcuts provide optional ways to work with your dining collection. In Settings, choose whether Siri can answer dining questions and whether Spotlight may include dining history, notes, or companion names.
When sharing places, notes are left out by default. Review the sharing options before sending. Sharing a food profile is a separate, intentional action; choose the information to include.
Your collection uses your device and private iCloud storage when available. Maps search, directions, and some other features use Apple’s services. Location, contacts, photos, and calendar permissions are requested when you use the relevant feature. Read the privacy policy for the full details, including restaurant-hours lookups.
Troubleshooting & support
Which devices can run the beta?
The current iPhone and iPad beta requires iOS / iPadOS 27. It does not run on iOS 26. Install through TestFlight on a compatible device.
Search is empty or unavailable
Check your connection, restaurant spelling, and search area. Try a city or ZIP instead of your current location. You can add a restaurant manually if Maps can’t find it.
A permission is denied or intelligence is unavailable
You can keep using manual entry and selections. If you want to use a feature that needs a permission, enable it in your device’s Settings. Apple Intelligence support is optional and depends on device availability.
A save fails or the app crashes
For a failed save, keep the draft and retry after resolving the reported issue. After a crash, first check Places: the restaurant might have saved before the interruption. Open the existing record rather than adding it again.
Send feedback through TestFlight or email support with the build number, the steps you took, and what happened. Only include screenshots or dining details you’re comfortable sharing.
